South Platte Rock Climbing

Climbing is inherently dangerous. Climb at your own risk. This is not an instruction on how to rock climb or where to rock climb, it is merely my opinion. Failure to learn how to climb and failure to learn about where and when to climb can lead to death. Get qualified instruction before climbing.

The South Platte is one of Colorado’s most iconic rock climbing destinations, known for its bullet-hard granite slabs, technical face climbing, and strong traditional climbing ethic. Rock climbing in the South Platte features hundreds of routes ranging from moderate 5.6 slabs to bold, highly technical climbs that demand precise footwork and solid crack skills.

Located southwest of Denver near Bailey, the South Platte offers a remote, canyon-style climbing experience with minimal bolting and a strong emphasis on trad protection. Climbers should expect longer approaches, runout routes, and a quieter atmosphere compared to Front Range sport areas. Early starts are recommended during summer, and careful attention to access rules helps preserve this historic Colorado climbing area.
