“You unlock this monument with the key of reverence. Beyond it lies a dimension not only of bronze and stone, but of imagination—a place where shadows speak and time rewinds. You’ve just crossed into the presence of Rod Serling… the architect of the Twilight Zone.”

From space men to invading robots, and even gremlins at 20,000 feet, I’ve been a huge fan of The Twilight Zone since I watched it with my dad when I was a kid.
So, when I discovered that Rod Serling grew up in Binghamton, NY, I knew I had to explore some of the local spots that inspired or were mentioned in the original series.
My first stop was Recreation Park, a great city park with walking paths, a pond to sit by, a kids’ play area, and several physical references to Rod Serling.
Starting off the journey, near the parking lot, there’s a giant white gazebo, with numerous columns and a plaque in the center of the ground that proudly proclaims, “Rod Serling: Creator of The Twilight Zone.” This monument is in recognition of the one featured in the episode “Walking Distance.”
Up next is the famous carousel from the same episode. In the tv show episode, the gazebo is just in front of the carousel. In reality, it’s not near the gazebo, but it’s clearly visible from there. In the episode, the carousel is open-air style, but this one is housed in a large building. Perhaps in the past, it was also open-air? The building was not open when I visited, but I was able to peek through some of the windows and capture a couple of photos of the carousel. While this particular carousel wasn’t featured in the episode, it inspired the one shown in the episode.
Finally, I made my way to the newest Rod Serling attraction; the Rod Serling Statue. This amazing bronze statue of Rod Serling is a fitting tribute with an open door and door frame behind him. The door is ajar, tilted slightly, and it reads, “You unlock this door with the key of Imagination.” The statue was erected by the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation.
It’s a magnificent bronze tribute to Rod Serling, surrounded by inscribed bricks. An excellent tribute to one of my favorite science fiction writers.
There are other places in Binghamton that reference or were important to Rod Serling’s life, but I was out of time. Maybe I’ll check them out someday, in The Twilight Zone. (Cue Music)
